In the increasingly in-demand field of generative AI adoption, the company collaborates with a University of Tokyo-originated startup to deliver corporate support that combines cutting-edge AI technology with deep business consulting expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CEO Shun Miyamoto left a consulting firm to go independent and found the company. He describes the motivation behind that decision as a desire to &#8220;increase the number of people who find meaning and vitality in their work&#8221; and to &#8220;create a place where people can work that way.&#8221; We spoke with CEO Miyamoto about his career to date, the conviction that led him to go independent and found the company, and the business it runs today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-border -border04\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p><strong>Shun Miyamoto<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After graduating from the Faculty of Law at Keio University, he worked at BayCurrent Consulting, Inc. and KPMG FAS Co., Ltd. before founding BiT &amp; Company, Inc. in April 2023, where he serves as CEO. He specializes in consulting across IT\/DX, BPR\/operational standardization, and due diligence. Had you always planned to become a consultant?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>No, not at all. I was on the baseball team at university, and many of the seniors around me went into general trading companies, securities firms, and banks, so I was initially interested in those kinds of fields too. But at a joint company briefing I happened to attend, I was approached by BayCurrent Consulting \u2014 the firm I ended up joining \u2014 and as I heard more about it, I found myself drawn to the work of a consultant. The speed at which things move, the ability to see across a wide range of industries \u2014 it struck me as a role with real scope for challenge and a lot of interesting possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At BayCurrent I built up my experience as a consultant, handling a diverse mix of engagements including strategic planning, operational improvement, and IT. Those days were just as interesting as I&#8217;d imagined before joining. I then moved to KPMG FAS, where I worked on projects involving the implementation of ERP packages and other core systems, as well as IT due diligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"toc-2\">\u2014 After roughly four years as a company employee, you went independent and began working as a freelance consultant.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There were many people at those consulting firms who had built outstanding careers, but looking back, I don&#8217;t think I saw many people who were managing to balance work and their personal lives at the same time. Consulting is grueling work \u2014 days of staying at the office until the last train were the norm. Those with families were spending the better part of each day away from their partners and children. A fair number of people couldn&#8217;t hold up under the workload and ended up leaving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I couldn&#8217;t believe that every one of those senior colleagues actually wanted to live that way, and the picture painted by so many consultants around me wasn&#8217;t necessarily one I aspired to. If building a career as a consultant would ultimately lead me to that same place, I felt it wasn&#8217;t the shape I was looking for. That thinking led me to move to a different firm, but my feelings didn&#8217;t change much. Changing jobs wasn&#8217;t going to solve this \u2014 I became convinced of that, and chose to go out on my own as a freelancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"toc-3\">\u2014 Weren&#8217;t you anxious about going independent?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I was still in my late twenties, and I figured that even if things didn&#8217;t work out as a freelancer, I could always go back to being a company employee. Knowing that option was there, I concluded that if I was going to take the leap, now was the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also did my research before leaving. There are many services today that introduce consulting work to freelancers, and I used those to get a feel for what kinds of connections and offers were out there \u2014 the volume of inquiries, the rate levels, the industries. Could you tell us what led you to take that step?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When I asked myself &#8220;what do I actually want?&#8221;, the answer was that I wanted to do my work as a consultant with more vitality. But if that had been all, I might have been satisfied staying freelance. What I really wanted was to see more consultants like that \u2014 and to create a place where a greater number of people could find genuine purpose and meaning in their work and thrive doing it. That became the main reason I founded the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"toc-6\">\u2014 Could you tell us about what the company does?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a word, we provide comprehensive consulting services centered on IT. Our primary focus is operational efficiency improvement and DX support, through which we assist a wide variety of clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the operational efficiency side, a common scenario involves standardizing work that has become siloed in individuals, and building workflows that anyone can follow consistently. We frequently receive requests that bundle together efforts to reduce the labor hours in those standardized workflows and to automate the streamlined processes using IT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the IT\/DX side, we handle a broad range of requests under the umbrella of DX, covering system implementation and replacement across the board. Linked to process automation, we have also been seeing a growing number of consultations around generative AI adoption. We also take on new business development, M&amp;A-related engagements, and marketing projects, but roughly ninety percent of what we do falls within operational efficiency and IT\/DX.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"toc-7\">\u2014 You mentioned generative AI just now \u2014 is demand increasing?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In April 2024, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications published the &#8220;AI Business Operator Guidelines (Version 1.0).&#8221; This document sets out a unified framework for AI governance aimed at promoting the safe, secure, and effective use of AI, and presents the basic principles for companies in Japan when developing, providing, and using AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The combination of growing attention to generative AI in general, and the fact that rule-making frameworks like this are now taking shape, is accelerating the move toward AI adoption \u2014 and generative AI adoption in particular \u2014 among Japanese companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"toc-8\">\u2014 What are your company&#8217;s strengths when it comes to generative AI support?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We collaborate with Robinson Consulting, Inc., a University of Tokyo-originated startup with strong expertise in generative AI contract development and on-site implementation. The University of Tokyo is home to Professor Yutaka Matsuo, widely recognized as one of Japan&#8217;s leading authorities on AI, and Robinson Consulting has a large number of AI engineers who came out of Professor Matsuo&#8217;s laboratory. Their strength lies in deep familiarity with AI knowledge, cutting-edge technology, and the latest research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While corporate appetite for generative AI is growing, the challenges standing in the way of adoption are still substantial, and the barriers remain high in practice. There are other companies with generative AI technical capabilities, but thinking through AI implementation that truly addresses a company&#8217;s problems requires a thorough understanding of that company&#8217;s business and operations \u2014 and the ability to approach implementation, development, and operation from that perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have handled a large number of operational efficiency and related engagements and have built up extensive knowledge of business environments and operations on the ground. We are confident that very few companies can offer what we do: the combination of consulting capability grounded in that knowledge with Robinson Consulting&#8217;s generative AI expertise and technology. Most back-office functions are outsourced. Consulting engagements vary in scale \u2014 some can be handled entirely by internal team members, but when that&#8217;s not the case, we bring in external freelancers on a contract basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The freelancers we work with are a diverse group. We also operate a service called &#8220;Pro-Freelancers,&#8221; which introduces DX, BPR, and similar engagements to freelance consultants, and we sometimes call on people we&#8217;ve connected with through that service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"toc-11\">\u2014 You are currently recruiting for consulting roles. Could you tell us about the positions and profiles you&#8217;re most looking for?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We recruit for consulting roles on an ongoing basis, but what we need most right now is someone with manager-level consulting experience, or a senior consultant who is capable of performing manager-level work. We would be especially glad to find someone ambitious who wants to take part in running the company and help drive it forward together with us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"toc-12\">\u2014 Are you thinking more in terms of experienced professionals in their thirties?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Generally speaking, some people become senior consultants as young as twenty-seven or twenty-eight. It&#8217;s not unusual to reach manager level in the late twenties or early thirties either. We&#8217;d love to hear from people who have gained senior consultant or manager experience at a relatively young age \u2014 in their late twenties or early thirties \u2014 and are now looking to step to the front and take on work one or two levels higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"toc-13\">\u2014 What qualities do you prioritize when hiring?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The most important thing we look for is self-initiative and leadership. There is no shortage of people who can execute on what they&#8217;re asked to do. But what clients are looking for is someone who can take a broad view, think ahead rather than just react to what&#8217;s in front of them, and proactively communicate what will genuinely benefit the client. We&#8217;re looking for people who combine that kind of drive with the ability to guide clients in a positive direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"toc-14\">\u2014 What kind of mindset are you hoping to find in the people you work with?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;d love to work with people who can enjoy failure. Consulting is fascinating work, but it&#8217;s hard. There are times when things go wrong. Rather than being crushed by those setbacks, people who can find something enjoyable even in that experience and turn it into personal growth are, I think, the kind of people who will genuinely enjoy working here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work also tends to suit people who prefer working as part of a team over going it alone. In consulting, individual capability matters enormously, and the work often plays out as a battle of individual strengths. But when it comes to delivering what clients need, combining diverse perspectives within a team opens up far more possibilities than any one person working solo. The first thing we&#8217;d want is for you to build a base of clients who specifically ask for you by name \u2014 people who say &#8220;I&#8217;d really like you to handle this engagement&#8221; or &#8220;I&#8217;d love to consult you whenever something comes up.&#8221; At the same time, we&#8217;d want you to assemble your own team to help clients solve their challenges and develop the capacity to support them as a unit, enabling you to respond to a wide range of client needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next stage beyond that would be less about facing the front line directly and more about taking a role that looks across the client company as a whole. You&#8217;d be positioned somewhat like an advisor to the client organization \u2014 fielding various consultations, helping to clarify and organize their challenges, forming teams, and overseeing the drive toward concrete solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once someone reaches the point of doing that for multiple client companies simultaneously, we may well see members go on to serve as outside directors or management advisors at one of those companies. Producing that kind of talent is one of the visions we have for what this company can become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"toc-17\">\u2014 What would you say are the concrete benefits of working at your company?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We work hard to provide strong incentives for our members, because we want this to be a place where people find genuine purpose in their work and thrive doing it. For example, at the &#8220;build your own team and develop the capacity to support clients&#8221; stage I described earlier, we have a system in place where your incentive increases as your team grows, with the amount reflected in your following month&#8217;s salary. By designing a structure where the harder you work, the more visible your results become and the more those results come back to you personally, we aim to help people find meaning in their work and enjoy doing it. That&#8217;s the philosophy behind how we&#8217;ve built our systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, we genuinely want people to value their lives outside of work, so we&#8217;re also mindful of not letting anyone overwork. We have two COOs, and both of them finish work by eight or nine in the evening at the latest. Other members, depending on project circumstances, also consistently wrap up at regular hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"toc-18\">\u2014 What&#8217;s your vision for the future?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We plan to keep operational efficiency, IT, and DX at the core of our business while putting even greater emphasis on generative AI. In addition to our collaboration with Robinson Consulting, we are progressing on various initiatives with several other companies working in generative AI, and we are building the capability to deliver consulting that draws on cutting-edge technology across a range of generative AI fields \u2014 including image generation, language generation, and audio generation. We intend to leverage these strengths to help clients make use of generative AI in ways that genuinely address their challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of scale, we want to grow to one hundred people \u2014 including external freelance talent \u2014 within three years, and to five hundred people by 2030. A company with five hundred members would carry meaningful presence and impact in the consulting industry. By being widely known as a company that operates with the value of increasing the number of consultants who work with real vitality, we hope to contribute to making the consulting industry itself a better place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Work gives people the chance to meet others, have diverse experiences, earn income, build a career, and ultimately expand the possibilities available to them in life. We want to be a company that celebrates and supports people who find purpose in their work, thrive doing it, and use that work to broaden their horizons.
